3d184 Challenge – Christmas Bird!

by Lyn Bernatovich on October 2, 2012

I am delighted to bring you this week’s 3d Challenge that is totally inspired by something I saw on Pinterest.  At the end of this post, I’ll show you what got me all gaga for this project and you’ll quickly see that anyone can re-create this bird!  I chose a holiday theme using Authentique papers, but I see this project in any color combination and for any occasion.

The bird itself is a Sizzix diecut, but with all the bird patterns out there, you can easily find your own template to use if you don’t have the Sizzix diecut.  You will need to cut two birds.  Sandwiched in between the two birds is a little box shape that is stuffed with a square of floral foam.  The foam allows the bird legs to be inserted and hot glued securely as well as the holiday trims on top.  The bird’s ‘feet’ are chunky wood discs from a craft store and spray painted with Tattered Angels Olive Vine Glimmer Mist and hot glued on.

Here’s a side view of the box in between the two birds:

For the bird legs, I wound regular string found at a home supply store around bamboo skewers.  Begin the spiral by affixing a Glue Dot or dabbing craft glue on the string first.  Wrap and twirl the string tightly around the skewer and affix another Glue Dot or dab of craft glue at the end.

Here’s a photo showing the spiraling on the skewer:

Next, take a contrasting string or twine (I used red crochet thread) and spiral in the opposite direction over the white string layer.

To decorate the front of the bird, cut a shape for the wing, create flowers by cutting out different sizes of spirals and stick some tulle behind the flowers.  3d foam tape the wing and hot glue the remaining items in place.

Here’s a close up of the wing and flower cluster:

If you have some gem flourishes, add that to the wing for extra pizzaz.  I edged the wing with a thin line of German Glass Glitter.

Here’s the box template:

Cut a piece of pattern paper 6-1/2″ x 2-1/2″ and score at 1/2″, 3″, 3-1/2″ and 6″

The finished ‘box’ will look like this:
